For PKMNation

Well it’s a marvelous night for a moondance

“With the stars up above in your eyes….”

Event time! Behold my new desktop background! :la:

So in honor of Mother’s Day last week, PKMNation has hosted an event where Poké-kids get together with their moms. I had a lot of sketches going, but I couldn’t get them done in time…but there was one I did that gave me an idea—especially considering I have a Pokémon who has a very unique relationship with his mother….

In the events of the October Renaissance Faire, it’s quite clearly stated that the Cresselia encountered (which is heavily implied to be female) has a child, Blood Moon Cresselia, which subsequently ended up staying at the Rockin’ K Ranch. Moon still stays in contact with her, but Cresselia is a wild Pokémon—meaning no ID number and no reference.

I listened to a few albums while doing this—Van Morrison’s Moondance, Three Dog Night’s The Best of Three Dog Night, and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle Vol. 1. I figured Moondance was appropriate because yes, they are dancing in the moonlight—and CCR has a song titled “Dancing in the Moonlight,” which is also appropriate. :D And the song Moon is named after, “Bad Moon Rising,” came on as I was working on him. Fancy that. :)

I consulted sulfurbunny’s Digital Painting Tutorial for the shading on this—the tutorial used SAI, but hey, technique is technique. And I am unfortunately to be fed to giggles (whatever that is) because I used straight white on the highlights—but since the highlights come from moonlight, which tends to wash things out, I felt it was justified. Although in retrospect, I could have used a really pale blue….Next time….

So I think I’ll be using Sulfur’s technique for paintings like this and stick to my old technique for cartoons and such. :)

And here’s a star tutorial—it’s not the one I used, but it’s close enough, considering the original tutorial I used seems to have ceased to exist….

I was going to include a few other Pokémon in this, but I figured it benefitted more from having just these two in it. And this also has some roots in my family history—my Mom got her love of dancing from her mom (my grandmother) because she would take her out and use her as a dance partner. So Mom has been dancing since she was five.

Anyway, I think I’ve said everything….Oh, yes—Moon gets eight levels for Full Body, Shading, Event Bonus, and Background, as the leveling rules have changed….And he gets a dance with his mom, too. :)

“In the moon light, on a magic night,

“All the moon light, on a magic night,

“Can I have just one more moondance with you, my love?”
