Story time! :la:

“I’m not incompetent,” Weaton protested.

“You could have fooled me,” Yin-Ko countered smoothly. “Considering your first idea was feeding yourself to the bear.”

“Actually, that was on my list of things to avoid.”

“Right. fortunately for you, my keen intellect means I’ve already deduced a plan for getting the bats away from the bear.”

“Wow,” Twinkle said, sounding admiring. “It’s a really good thing you came along with us then.”

“Thank you—you get the gold star for this venture,” Yin-Ko told her.

Weaton pointed at the shiny Cleffa. “She is the gold star on this venture.”

“Then we can award her to herself. Now, I’ll get to organizing everyone, and when the bear is distracted, you shoo the bats away.”

“Not pick them up?”

“Not unless you want rabies. You might want to use your bathrobe to herd them.”

“But I like my bathrobe.”

You like your fingers more. Now, as for the rest of you—we are going to be emulating Gideon.”

Which necessitated a minor refresher course before laying out the plan and sending them off to their positions. Psychically check to see if everyone was in place, make sure Weaton wasn’t hyperventilating (too badly), and then make his presence known.

The low, slow, mocking laugh had the intended effect—the bear (and the bats) immediately looked around, locked on him as he floated into view.

“Interesting what you find in the woods nowadays,” Yin-Ko said conversationally. “Am I interrupting anything?”

“My lunch,” the bear snarled, before turning back to the bats. “And unless you want to be the main course, you’ll be on your way.”

“Now, they wouldn’t make a mouthful for you.”

The bear rounded on him, ramped up to its hind legs to free those brutal front claws—

“No,” it snarled. “But you would.”

Yin-Ko backed off, prompting the bear to step forward, arm swinging—

And put itself off-balance, however temporarily.

Now, Yin-Ko ordered psychically.

Instantly, all throughout the woods around them erupted in cacophonic noise—Brass, Ves, Ci-Ci, and Twinkle using Uproar, screaming and yelling their collective heads off.

Yin-Ko, with his fingers in his ears, figured that wouldn’t take very long, considering all of them were all head.

But it did the job—it startled the bear so badly that it fell on its back—quickly try to right itself to face the new threat—

Ves, you’re up, Yin-Ko ordered. Ci-Ci, Twinkle, get ready.

Ves floated into view just enough to shoot out a few ghostly flames—Will-O-Wisp—aiming it for the bear’s fur. Off to the sides, Ci-Ci and Twinkle started glowing, until Copycat took effect and they too were able to shoot flames at the bear.

“ENOUGH!” the bear roared. “I will not be bested by a meager handful of morsels!”

“I’d back off if I were you,” Yin-Ko ordered. “Before you find yourself grossly outnumbered.”

Which was the cue for the rest of the little team to start vibrating and jumping, faster and faster and faster—

Until the clearing was completely populated by the resulting collective Double Team.

“Still think you can manage?” Yin-Ko asked, employing his psyche to create the illusionary copies for his own Double Team. “Individual snowflakes might not be dangerous, but an avalanche certainly is.”

The bear was looking around, saw that it was surrounded, tried to back away but couldn’t—not when it was surrounded on all sides—

Yin-Ko heard Weaton quietly talking—he must have finally worked up enough nerve to crawl forward to the bat. “Uh, hi, nice to meet you, can we get away from the big mean bear, please?”

“Mama, there’s a funny human on the ground there,” the little bat squeaked.

Which unfortunately, directed the bear’s attention to Weaton. Worse, it decided to go for broke and charge straight for him.

Weaton sat bolt upright, screaming in alarm—the bats collided with his chest in their own haste to get away—the other Pokémon darted to him, despite having no way to stop the bear—

And Yin-Ko, being the one who kept his head, zipped over, rapidly made sure everyone was holding Weaton as he grabbed his shoulders—

And then focused on a big icy beast back at the ranch.

In a split second, they were home, several of the other Pokémon running over upon hearing Weaton still screaming.

“AAAAAaoh, oh. We’re back,” Weaton noted finally. “Why are we back? What happened to the bear?”

“Oh, that’s right,” Yin-Ko said, snapping his fingers. “I wanted to watch that.”

And so, thinking of the clearing, Yin-Ko Teleported back, ending up next to the very confused ally he had switched places with.

“What is this?” the bear asked, looking at Ellsworth.

“An excellent question,” Yin-Ko responded. “This is Ellsworth. Ellsworth, this is the bear that just tried to eat Weaton and a few others. What do you think of that?”

The Kyurem started before very slowly and deliberately turning his head to face the bear, snarling from deep within as he snorted ice and snow.

Ellsworth was about to make his opinion on that very clear.

Final Word Count: 845 words

Event time! In which a bear is about to eat a bat and Yin-Ko and company decide to do something about it….

For those who wonder, Yin-Ko is referencing the Biblical story of Gideon, specifically Judges Chapter 7 in the Bible.  Noise is also recommended for scaring off predators as well as Midianites and Amalekites (although you then get the gags in Montana about how bear leavings have bells and pepper spray in them).

Yin-Ko’s approach is also based on how predators work in real life: predators will always go for the easy sell.  Predators cannot graze like herbivores can, so they have to get what they can while expending the least amount of energy.  It’s why hawks keep returning to my backyard—they know chickens are there.  Predators will go after sick or singular targets, and leave if they feel that the risk is too great, since they can’t afford to be injured (any injury would cripple their ability to hunt, thus compounding the problem).

A little miffed at myself that I didn’t budget my time properly so I could shade the whole thing, but I did make sure to shade that first panel, since I knew it was the money shot—that shot is based heavily on the bear attack in the movie Balto.  One of my favorite movies as a kid.

And, since we can design our own bear-mon, presenting for your viewing pleasure, a shiny variant Pangoro/Ursaring!  Or rather, Bearger from Don’t Starve.  I saw an opportunity, and I seized it. :)

In other news: I’m really loving Weaton’s expressions in this one, specifically in the bottom left-hand corner there.  May come back and animate it for an icon or something….

Moving on—levels!

Yin-Ko

Gains no levels, being Level 100, but he does gain caps:

Simple Background x 4

+2 Event Levels

800/100 (100 words=1 Level) = 8 Levels

3 + 10 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 8 = 31 Caps!

Fun fact: at the end of this deviation, I had planned for Yin-Ko to pull what he pulls here and leave the cloaked ‘mons dealing with an angry Ellsworth.  Obviously, I scrapped that plan, but I was able to use it here. :)
